Energy Efficient Freezers

As you may know, there are two types of freezers to choose from. There are traditional chest freezers and upright freezers. Traditional chest freezers take up a lot of floor space but are often more energy efficient (more on that later), while upright freezers make it easier to find and retrieve your frozen food items. I will teach you how to choose the best freezer among the new breeds of energy efficient freezers available to you in this article.

There are a few tips and tricks you may not have realized. Energy efficiency is the concept of making consumer products that practice energy conservation in and of themselves. This way the owner's electricity bill/energy consumption is lower, without much effort on part of the owner. Choosing energy efficient freezers is a wise and cost-effective choice. They are built to save you money.

Refrigeration is a major consumer of energy. Did you know that all freezers and refrigerators are rated on energy efficiency? Their rating system is from A to G. Energy efficient freezers rated "A" are the most energy efficient. Freezers rated "G" are the least energy efficient. Also, look for the Energy Star logo.

Energy Star is a multi-government, international program that has standardized energy efficient products. You want to choose a freezer that has the Energy Star logo on it. For a refrigerator to earn the Energy Star logo, it needs to be 20% more efficient than the bare minimum requirements. Dishwashers need at least 40% more energy efficiency to earn the Energy Star Logo.

Look for the yellow sticker on your energy efficient freezers. This is a Department of Energy sticker that will tell you the average cost per year to operate the appliances. By looking at these labels you can compare the freezers easily amongst themselves.

Did you know frost build up causes your freezer to be less efficient? It's true. The motor has to run more, in order to keep the freezer (and all that frost) just as cold. Always remember to defrost your energy efficient freezers. Frost builds up when air does not move inside. Most new freezers have an option to always keep the air inside slightly circulating. This prevents frost build up and eliminates the hard chore of defrosting, which often requires complete removal of your food items when you do it. It can be a task that is time consuming and annoying.
